Autumnal colours…….at Hardcastle Crags

After my recent rainswept experience of Vilnius, it was nice to see some autumn sun here in West Yorkshire and all the more reason to take off for Hardcastle Crags near Hebden Bridge.

Entering the National Trust property you are immediately assaulted by a cornucopia of autumnal colours, and with blue sky with slight wisps of cloud above, you have the perfect day for a walk around the property.

During my four mile round walk I passed the old mill, saw some trainee “lumberjacks” felling old trees and chopping up logs, saw the trees in all their glory and walked at the side of the river in the most scenic of surroundings.

Amongst all of this was a reminder of the devastating floods of about a year ago, when a torrent of water swept down the valley until it reached Hebden Bridge and surrounding districts and then wreaked havoc on buildings. One of the bridges across the river had been replaced earlier this year (2016) and there are still slabs of concrete at the side and in the middle of the river, remnants of the old bridge. To dislodge such large pieces of concrete indicates the force of the water when it came down the valley.

Anyway, these are happier times and bridges have been replaced and the footpath alongside the river re-established. The views alongside the river are simply beautiful and there is no better time to visit than in the autumn.

I took my trusty Nikon D5200 with me and tried to capture some of the colour along the route and I have posted some here which I hope, gives some indication of the beauty of Hardcastle Crags.
